Sidearm Sports is a common third-party product used by our higher education clients to host their athletic sites.
Set a Page Limit
The simplest way to limit the number of pages in the site inventory is to by Setting a Page Limit in the site's settings.
We recommend 100 for these sites as a good starting point.
Ignore Paths for the Site
Another option for controlling the page count is, in addition to Ignoring pages with URL queries, using the following Ignored Paths in the site's settings:
^\/news/(201\d)\/.* | regex |
.*\/sports\/201.* | regex |
.*\/roster\/.* | regex |
.*\/opponent-history\/.* | regex |
.*\/documents\/201.* | regex |
.*\/boxscore\/.* | regex |
.*\/(tag|tags|category|categories|author|authors|feed|feeds|user)\/.* | regex |
.*\/(200\d)\/.* | regex |
Steps to add these ignores to your Sidearm Sports athletic site:
Copy the above excludes into a spreadsheet program.
Save it as formatted above, using both columns, to a CSV file.
Import the CSV file into the site.
Re-crawl the site.
Exclude Galleries
Higher education sports sites traditionally have thousands of images. With Sidearm Sports, the /galleries directory is another location that can add a huge page count to your site. This directory can also be excluded, but you need to be aware that all images need appropriate alternative text.
Sidearm Sports software provides a location for clients to enter alternative text for images, but it is up to the client's internal teams to enter the relevant information.
