Landmarks help screen reader users move around webpages quickly and easily.
Popular screen readers allow users to jump directly to different sections of a page using ARIA landmarks. This offers a clean, behind-the-scenes way for users to skip straight to the content they want without altering the page's visual design.
According to the ARIA specification, the following landmarks should only be used once on a page:
role="banner"role="main"role="contentinfo"
Can't find your role duplication?
Some standard HTML5 elements have implicit or built-in roles:
<header>has an implicit role of banner<nav>has an implicit role of navigation<footer>has an implicit role of contentinfo
Other ARIA landmarks can be used multiple times if given a unique accessible role or title. The HTML5 specification is more flexible and allows multiple instances of the equivalent elements—header, main, and footer.
It is a best practice to include just one banner, main, and footer landmark overall, whether you’re using ARIA roles or HTML5 elements, as this keeps the page structure clear and easier to navigate for users.
